Getting Real Chapter 5: The essential

September 25, 2008

Being a developer is not just all about developing. Sometimes, people misunderstood the term developer or programmer because they think that they will just be programmer or developer forever. This chapter rebuke me of putting so many items in my application but there’s no use for my users. Example of this is the application that I’ve created in the Imagine Cup competition. I put so many items that I think will make my application looks good but there’s no use for the users.  I make it  broad without even noticing that it makes our application complicated.

Now, I’ve learned that when I’m creating an application, I should just make my application simple, easy to use, user-friendly,  and has a lot of user experience. UX is the term for making the application simple but usable. When we will create an application , I should ask first my user what really he or she needs. It’s important so that the other functionalities that I might be putting in will be useful for him or her.

I’ve learned that as a programmer, I should think about making an application that can change the world. Not just thinking about creating money but I should make sure that my application can help other people in their daily lives.

Getting Real Chapter 4: The Big Problem with a big solution

September 25, 2008

This chapter is all about the big ideas in creating an application. Sometimes, I personally have so many ideas on creating a software but I cannot do it as the way forsee it. Why? due to lack of knowledge in developing hard-to-create applications.

To be a hardcore programmer, I should study well in order to achieve my dream. I should know more techniques in order to do the ideas that once came out of my mind. I should also have an open mind to receive criticisms in order to know what really is missing. Dreaming big is means a lot of efforts. If you want to achieve your dream, do your best and take all the risks to achieve it.

To be successful in the field that we choose doesn’t mean working hard. We should just work smart and think like a smart person in order to achieve it.In the field of programming, We should not focus first on the detailed picture. We should look at the big picture in order to see what we really need to see.

Another interesting picture that I believe that could help me is that, I should not waste my time on the problem that is not yet there. Why should I focus on something that I personally don’t encounter while doing my application. I should just make decision just in time not once I’m already having a problem about that problem.

MyShopify: My Online Shop

September 19, 2008

This is My Shopify link (http://jaythree03.myshopify.com/collections/all)

The First thing that came out in my mind when I saw this site was this question: “What will be the product that I will sell?” Yes, the site was cool. no more coding. User-friendly. Everything will be useless without a product.

This site really gives me so many ideas on how I could create my websites. The easiest way to create an online store without even coding.

Getting Real Chapter 3: Be yourself

September 16, 2008

in this chapter, Ruby is now being described. “When it comes to web technology, change must be easy and cheap.” Ruby makes the impossible to be possible. how? as my professor often tells us, a 30 days application in java is just 3 days developing stage in ruby. Mass is described by this chapter as the number. It’s the midpoint of all the things that are happening. Increasing the mass is a problem while decreasing it is good. Less software, less coding is a good example of decreasing the mass. Having a huge number of software in the hard drive gives us so many things to update. So many things to think about.Creating an application or software gives us more coding because we should run these applications in our own machines.

The need of desktop applications give us a lot of costs. Before we could have a single software with a single function, we should buy it first so that we could use it legally. Web applications are the answer for our unhealthy pockets. Using web applications, we could use multiple useful applications without paying a single peso. There are so many open-source applications to choose from that can be use in our everyday lives. Many of the companies today are now shifting from desktop applications to web application because of its usability and cost efficiency.

According to this chapter, in developing a web application, start only with 3. a Designer, a developer and a sweeper. someone who can be in the two worlds If we can build a version one with only 3 people, we could still do the next version with those 3 persons involved.

Lastly, Be yourself. you should not pretend to be someone else. To create an application is a choice, not a burden to carry on.

Getting Real Chapter 2: Build less, Do more

September 15, 2008

According to this chapter, before we could actually beat a competitor, we must be one step ahead of them. If they have 6, we should have 7. If they have 10, we should have 11. I think this kind of thinking is just for someone who is envious to your competitor. What we need is to think about what really the problem is and do less but be smart to solve it.

Another thing in this chapter is the problem of creating my own software for solving real life problems. Before we could actually develop an application, we must first think of the things that are important to be solve. We should target our own problems first and be the target audience for it.

To create a software, you must first need a fund for the costs. But what if there’s no fund? so simple, fund yourself. Funds outside your territory is just the plan b. why? Because if there’s someone who will give funds for your project, they are the ones who will earn more.

To know whether your application is good, try to know the counter part of your application. If the opponent’s application is better, analyze your application deeply. look at the smallest part of it and think ways on how we can do better.

Getting real: The future of the web applications

September 11, 2008

Are you sick and tired of coding thousands of lines of codes for a single application over and over again?Well, you should start to get real. Getting Real is a smaller, faster, better way to build software. It caught myattention since I’m a developer who wants to know more and to learn new innovations that could help me in the industry. Coding is really fun, but once you always do it everyday for just a single application to be done, sometimes it makes me sick. I’m looking for something that can help me manage my busy schedules and can also help me do my tasks easily. Microsoft launches Visual Studio 2008 which fascinate me to learn more about programming. It has a rapid application development which I can do my application without coding anything. It also has so many extensions that to choose from that can make my coding life much easier. Now, I wanna learn more programming languages so that I could have an edge with the other programmers around. I’ve heard about Ruby on Rails first in the Y4IT. The name caught my attention since Iknow that ruby is a developer’s tool. I believe that it can also help me in my carrier.

Let’s now go back to our topic, “to be real”. Getting real removes the traditional style of creating an application. Less coding, less pain, less testing, less cost, less time and all that. When I heard it(or somewhat read it), there’s a question at the back of my mind on how do really this thing works. I mean, yes it can create an application, but what if I want to see the source codes or I wanna update my application, how can I do it? I know all my questions can be answered by people who knows about this application.

Are you ready to get real? I’m ready!

This is my first post!

September 9, 2008

September 9, 2008 is the date today. We have to create our own blog in our subject IS-EBIZ. I don’t know what to post that’s why I’m writing this way.  I wanna tell a story regarding my course. Before I took IS(Formerly I.M.), I don’t know what will be my future is. Then I became an MSP, now I really love my course. That’s all!

Hello world!
